Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing industries around the world, and the video game industry is no exception. From game production to testing, distribution, and publishing, AI is reshaping how we create and experience games. But what exactly does this mean for the professionals behind these games? What changes are they facing, and how can they prepare for the future?
These are the questions I’ve set out to answer in a new study I’m conducting for Game Only, a video game industry cluster in France. Over the next few months, I’ll be interviewing professionals across the video game industry to better understand how AI is impacting their daily work and how their roles are evolving. Through this study, I aim to explore both the challenges and opportunities presented by AI, while sharing the insights I gather along the way.
Why This Study Matters
AI is more than just a new tool for automation — it’s a transformative force. In video game production, AI is speeding up workflows, assisting with procedural generation, and even taking part in creative processes such as level design or NPC behavior. But while AI offers incredible potential, it also raises important questions for the industry’s workforce.
For instance:
-
How will AI affect the role of game designers and developers? Will they shift from creating assets to managing AI-driven tools?
-
What does the future hold for QA testers? As AI-driven testing tools become more sophisticated, how will traditional testing roles evolve?
-
How will publishing and distribution adapt? AI can streamline processes, but it also has the potential to disrupt traditional workflows in ways we have yet to fully comprehend.
This study will dive into these areas and more, aiming to provide a clearer picture of what AI means for the future of the industry.
My Approach: Interviewing Industry Experts
To understand the impact AI is having on these professions, I’ve decided to focus on the voices of the professionals themselves. I’ll be conducting interviews with key figures across the industry — from game designers and developers to QA testers, producers, and distributors. These interviews will form the backbone of the study, providing real-world insights into how AI is already influencing the day-to-day lives of video game professionals.
Through these conversations, I hope to uncover both the practical changes that AI is bringing to the industry and the deeper, more strategic shifts in how professionals approach their work. I believe that these firsthand accounts will offer valuable perspectives on where the industry is headed and how it can adapt to this rapidly changing landscape.
What to Expect
Throughout this process, I will be sharing regular updates on my findings. These updates will take the form of individual articles that focus on specific areas of the study, including:
-
Insights from interviews with professionals about how AI is impacting their specific roles.
-
Analysis of key trends and shifts in how AI is used in different stages of game development.
-
